I Love Music Under the Sea MINI Camp, ages 5-6

We'll learn lots of facts about the ocean and ocean life as we take an imaginary trip under the sea. Everyone will play fun songs on the ukulele and explore percussion instruments as we create an aquatic orchestra. Other activities will include crafts, games, dancing like a school of jellyfish floating through a coral reef, and investigating the science of how sound moves through water.

Creative Keyboards Piano Camp, ages 6-9

Let’s Make a Musical! Camp

Calling all campers who love to SING, ACT and CREATE! Spend a fun-filled week crafting a new musical with your fellow campers. Sing familiar songs and help create the story, movement and dialogue that connects the songs. Camp Director Jaclyn Stapp has performed in musicals such as Seussical, Beauty and the Beast, and Bye Bye Birdie, and her students have appeared on Broadway. The camp concludes on Friday with a performance of your new creation for family and friends.

Gotta Sing! Voice Camp

Spend a fun-filled week learning to sing! Campers are introduced to basic vocal technique while learning songs from musicals, movies and popular traditions. In the words of one past participant, “I learned how to sing and be more confident!” During the week campers will learn about using their voice as a musical instrument, how to prepare and present a solo, duet or small ensemble piece, and have lots of fun. Camp Directors Lyndee White and Karen Nestvold have extensive performing experience, including musical theater, opera and popular music. The camp concludes on Friday with an energetic performance for family and friends.

Violins and pianos and flutes, oh my! Do you love music but don’t know what instrument to play? Then this camp is for you! Campers will try out a variety of musical instruments, while learning basic musical concepts. Lori Shepherd holds a Masters degree in Clarinet performance from the University of Utah, and has performed around the world in various ensembles on a dizzying assortment of instruments, from saxophone in Shanghai as a performer at the World Expo 2010 to bass clarinet in Harlem as part of the Imani Winds Chamber Music Festival.

Pop Voice- Sing Like a Pop Star Camp, Ages 9-12

Calling all enthusiastic young singers! Spend a week singing your favorite pop tunes, learn how to use a microphone, present a song to an audience, and put on a show! Camp Director Kelley Johnson is an award-winning vocalist and has twice been selected by the U.S. State Department to tour as a Jazz Ambassador. Let’s Rock! Camp, ages 9-12

It's time to join a band! This summer, we're looking for musicians ages 9-12 who want to learn what it takes to be in a rock band. Campers will learn about rock n roll history, basic chord progressions, and improvisation, as well as showmanship, and performance do's and dont’s. Camp Director Antoine Martel is active in the local music scene, playing with the bands High Pulp and dentaru no tsuba, in addition to his work on solo projects. He’s a graduate of the prestigious McGill University (composition), former faculty member at the Academie de Musique de Montreal and has extensive experience playing in a variety of genres.  Activities include guest artists, clinics, and a Friday concert.

Flutes on Fire

Come join Music Works flutist Joshua Romatowski, Piccolo player of Symphony Tacoma, along with guest artist Brandon LePage, Principal Flutist of the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, for a summer intensive exploring unique and imaginative ways to experience the flute!  During this week long adventure we will explore tried and true flute techniques as well as improvisation, flute and electronics, beat boxing flute, and an introduction to piccolo (piccolos provided by Music Works for the duration of the camp). Also included will be private lessons, theory classes, and chamber music. The week will culminate with a grand performance featuring all participants. Each student must bring their own flute, and should be proficient with basic music reading and rhythm skills.

This is a vocal performance camp for young singers ready to work on their individual performance skills. Jazz Drama Camp for POPular Singers

Great singers tell the story of the song and use drama to do it. How do you do that well and be an “Original"? The greatest pop singers of all time - Lady Gaga, Amy Winehouse, Queen Latifah, Annie Lennox and Willie Nelson along with decades of greats like Tony Bennett, Joni Mitchell, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand all sing Jazz as easily as they can Pop music. How? By singing great songs with good melodies and learning to sing like themselves with a big open heart and a simple way of singing!!! Come learn how and have a ball doing it. This camp will help you sing better than ever and teach you to connect with the audience and fall in love with the music you’re singing!!

FULL - Cracking the Jazz Code - Jazz Camp (middle to high school)

Jazz is America's art form. The fundamentals of jazz are essential for any instrumentalist who is interested in performing commercial music. This camp will introduce students to improvisation, jazz styles, and musical skills through performance, master classes, listening sessions and harmony classes that will set the stage for exceptional, systematic jazz learning. The camp will include classes, workshops, performance groups as well as opportunities to jam. A final performance showcasing the students will take place on Friday at about 2:00 pm for friends and family to attend. Camp Director Christian Pincock is a trombonist, composer and educator who performs and teaches in Seattle and across the United States. Currently, Christian is a musical coach for Seattle Public School band programs through Musical Pathways Project. He has taught at Cornish College, University of New Mexico, the New Mexico Jazz Workshop and for public school systems in Boston, New York, and Albuquerque. Christian has degrees in jazz studies from New England Conservatory and Manhattan School of Music.

Rock Shop, ages 11-15

Have you been playing an instrument for one year or more? It's time to join a band! This summer, we're looking for musicians who want to learn what it takes to be in a rock band. AGES 12-16

Digital Music Camp, ages 12-16

What do film scores, large scale concerts, musical theater, contemporary pop recordings and television music have in common? In all cases the computer has been integrated into the processes as an essential tool in producing sound, in scoring sheet music, in recording tracks and in the enhancement of live performance. This camp shows student how they can use inexpensive software that can be installed on a home computer that can produce amazing results. Students will be producing as many small projects during the week as they can. A selection of their work will be shared in a performance on Friday for friends and family. Rob Frain has performed with international artists Winston Watson and The Meditations. His composition work includes films, while his passion is electronic music. Clark Grogan is currently an Ember Music affiliated artist and his releases can be heard and purchased from major digital distributors including iTunes, Amazon, and YouTube.

MUSIC THERAPY CAMPS

Music Explorers, ages 3 - 5 with parent or caregiver

This group includes developmentally appropriate music making fun! It is designed for parents or caregiver and child to enjoy therapeutic music experiences that address social, cognitive, play, motor, speech and language goals. The adult is actively involved with their child to enjoy the music making process as well as receive ideas for home use of music that can focus on their individual child’s needs. Social Skills through Music Summer Camp, ages 7-12

For students with special needs, this is a week-long version of our Social Skills through Music Group. This camp focuses on the fun of making music as a group, problem solving, & giving students an in-depth chance to work intensively on the end product of making fun music while working with their peers! The campers will compose music, perform with friends, use instruments and technology, and have a great therapist/student ratio. Come join the fun in this week-long version of our Teen Music Network! For students with special needs, The Teen Music Network Summer Camp focuses on making music as a group. Making music as a group inspires us to tap into our talents, do problem solving, gives us opportunities to socialize, explore creativity, compose music, and learn to use instruments and technology. Do you have extended care?

– Yes, but be sure to register in advance. Extended Care registration closes a week before the first day of your camp!

 

What are the hours for extended care?:

Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 9:30 am,

Monday -Thursday 3:30 pm – 5:30 pm.

What are the camp hours?:

Most camps run from 9:30 am – 3:30 pm. Campers dropped off before 9:20 am or picked up after 3:40 pm will be assessed an extended care charge for that day.

 

Do I need to bring a lunch?

YES – Music Works does not have food available for purchase. Please DO NOT include any peanut products in lunches!

 

Do I need to bring a snack?

– We suggest you pack one snack in your child’s lunch. Music Works will provide one snack each day for full day camps, things like fruit snacks or goldfish crackers. If you child has food sensitivities please provide them with two snacks.

 

What else should I bring to camp?

A water bottle!

 

Should I bring my instrument to camp?

This is appropriate for a few of the camps, such as Jazz Camp and Rock Shop. If you have questions about your camp contact registration@musicworksnw.org

 

Do we spend any time outside?

Weather permitting, campers will have some outside activities each day. Be sure to have your camper apply their sunscreen before coming to camp!

 

What should I leave at home?

Anything that you would be sad to lose! Phones may be brought to camp, to communicate with parents after camp is over, but they must remain in backpacks during the camp day.

 

Will there be a performance at the end of the week?

Most camps include a final performance for friends and family on Friday afternoon. You will receive information about the time of the performance by Wednesday of the camp week.

 

What is your Cancellation Policy?

You may cancel your registration for a camp for a full refund, less a $50 processing fee, up to June 15, 2019. Cancellations received between June 15th and up to two weeks before the camp start date will receive a 50% credit or refund. No credit or refund will be issued for cancellations received less than two weeks prior to the camp start date.

 

Ratio of adults to campers?

The maximum ratio of campers to adults is one adult for every 8 campers. Most camps the ratio will be closer to one adult for every 6 campers or less.

 

Do you serve special needs campers?

YES! We have a variety of camps for special needs populations. In addition, some of the camps are appropriate for all abilities. Please contact mtprogram@musicworksnw.org for additional information.
