Theory Through Composition

Music Theory through Composition is a concept well known as the oldest form of learning music theory (yes, even older than Mozart!) all the way through the present day. Abandoning worksheets and quizzes, students are encouraged to take music theory straight from lecture to the page through measurable assignments from simple melodies to multi-instrument arrangements. Young musicians who have been playing their main instrument or voice for at least 3 years will dive into compound meter, interval structures, melodic structures, diatonic harmony, and basic analysis. Campers will try their skills at arranging for 2-3 instruments in the form of melody, harmony, and chordal accompaniment.

Do I need to bring a snack? – We suggest you pack two snacks in your child’s lunch.

What else should I bring to camp? A water bottle and a mask or face shield.

Do we spend any time outside? All camps will include some outside time, weather permitting, especially for lunch and snack times.

What should I leave at home? Anything that you would be sad to lose! Phones may be brought to camp, to communicate with parents after camp is over, but they must remain in backpacks during the camp day.

Will there be a performance at the end of the week? Most camps include a final performance for friends and family on Friday afternoon. You will receive information about the time of the performance by Wednesday of the camp week.

What is your Cancellation Policy? You may cancel your registration for a camp for a full credit or refund, less a $50 processing fee, up to June 10, 2023. Cancellations received between June 11th and up to two weeks before the camp start date will receive a 50% credit or refund.

Ratio of adults to campers? The maximum ratio of campers to adults is one adult for every 8 campers. Most camps the ratio will be closer to one adult for every 6 campers or less.

Do you serve Neurodivergent campers? YES! We have a variety of camps for Neurodivergent and Disabled campers. In addition, some of the camps are appropriate for all campers. Please contact mtprogram@musicworksnw.org for additional information, or if your camper would benefit from 1:1 assistance during camp.
