Additional things you should know before you sign up for group instruction.
- Students may cancel registration at any time for a full refund to be issued prior to the first class meeting. No refunds will be issued after the first class meets.
- For most classes we need a minimum of four students enrolled in order for the class to run. If we do not meet the minimum enrollment for the class, it will be canceled and you will receive a full refund of tuition and fees.
- There are no refunds for missed classes.
This 10-week course is designed for parents/students looking for a casual - yet fun and educational - series of piano lessons. Each week students will learn new musical concepts which will be reinforced through ensemble playing. During this course students will learn about beats and rhythm, hand position at the piano, note names, intervallic reading, and the staff.
Parents are expected to attend, and participate, in all classes. Students will be required to purchase an accompanying text book for approximately $15. Supplemental material will be provided by the instructor.

Group Percussion
Beginning Group Percussion is designed to fulfill the requirements necessary to be accepted in to school band programs. Students will learn how to practice effectively as well as being introduces to the correct way to do rolls, paradiddles and other fundamental stickings, check out a bunch of cool instruments including the drum set, as well as basic reading. In addition the group plays exercises and grooves together that develops listening skills, good time keeping, dynamic sensitivity and team work! The classes are for 4th and 5th grade students, but anyone wishing to learn the basics can come in and try it out in the five week format.

Singers' Workshop
Now in its 6th year, Singers' Workshop has a strong tradition of generating ongoing friendships among participants.
Confidence and skill as a soloist are gained through only experience. Singers' Workshop provides genuine performance experience, AND is specially designed to meet the learning needs of the participants. Each participant performs a solo at every class meeting, accompanied by pianist Kristine Anderson (superb at all styles and a wealth of helpful advice).
Voice teacher Susan Strick, well known for her passion for making singers feel at home, brings empathy, a sense of humor, and a raft of surprising ideas to help empower each student. Teens and adults welcome.

My World Music
My World Music is a Parent/Caregiver and Child class that focuses on nurturing a love of music, inspiring creative expression, developing friendships and providing a great foundation for formal music lessons. We'll explore many styles of music through entertaining themes such as animals, seasons, food and transportation. We'll learn about rhythm, tempo, structure, and tonality through energetic and engaging activities. Each class will include singing, playing instruments, reading stories, parachute activities, movement games and tons of fun!

Introduction to Violin
Group Violin is offered during the school year and is for beginning violin students (Violin 1 is for ages 4-6, Violin 2 is for ages 7-10). Students will learn the basics of violin playing, including correct posture and setup, good tone and intonation. Students will learn how to play well in a group, but will have individual attention as well. This is a great stepping stone to private lessons, as well as school orchestra. Instruments are not provided for these class.

New! O'Connor Method, American School of String Training
Legendary six-time Grammy award-winning violinist and composer Mark O’Connor has developed a new method for strings, “A New American School of String Playing,” based on the American songbook. The method incorporates the pedagogy that familiarizes students with fingering, bowing, harmony, and improvisation that will apply in any musical situation using traditional pieces and arrangements that are at the root of American Jazz, Bluegrass and Classical styles. Instruments are not provided for these classes.
Early Childhood O'Connor (Ages 3-5):
An introduction to the American School of String Training. Students will learn rest and playing positions of the violin and bow through songs. Technique includes: pizzicato, bowing and naming open strings, and introduction to the rhythms and playing of Boil’em Cabbage Down. Learning opportunities: vocabulary development, listening skills, and pitch awareness. Parents are welcome (and encouraged!) to attend.

O'Connor for Ages 6+:

Computer Recording Class
Computer Recording lessons encourage creativity and self expression and are tailored to the needs of the individual student. The classes will show students how to write and record their own musical ideas using software such as Garage Band and Ableton Live. All hardware (computers, keyboards, etc.) are provided by the Lab. All Computer Recording classes are given in Music Works Northwest's New Audio Recording Lab.
