Early Childhood

I Love Music for Families with Young Children

I Love Music! is a developmental music and movement program for young children with their parents/caregivers. Through music, children and their parents/caregivers will be immersed in musical activities that support their child’s development in a fun way while encouraging their musical growth.  Music has been shown to help children’s social skills, cognitive skills, language and communication skills, motor skills, and emotional growth. Because it is developmental in nature, I Love Music! is an inclusive, mixed age program that allows for each child’s individual growth while having the fun of being in a group. I Love Music Family Jam Time

Bring your little one and join us for a mix-aged music class not only for children but for the parent/caregiver who wants to learn ukulele!  During Family Jam Time kids will move, dance, sing, and play for the main portion of the class with a special time each week devoted to the adult to learn new skills on their instrument.  Musical activities are aligned with the developmental stages of the children in the class and are tailored to fit the needs of the group.  This class is great for the child who loves music and for the parent/caregiver who wants to bring music home!  Note:  Parent or caregiver attending will need to provide his/her own ukulele.

Kids Ukulele

Kids' Ukulele is an introductory class for beginners who are interested in playing the ukulele in a fun group environment! Students will be introduced to tuning, chords, accompaniment patterns, songwriting, ensemble playing, and will participate in a fun performance at the end of the term!  Material for this class ranges from simple folk tunes to more complex and contemporary songs depending on the interests of the students.  Ukuleles are available to use for the term.  A deposit will be collected at time of sign out.

Suzuki Guitar Class

The Suzuki Guitar class allows younger students to play guitar intuitively in a fun group environment. There will be group music activities and games as well as individual learning which will prepare students to play in both solo and ensemble settings. The Suzuki method encourages parents to facilitate listening to recordings and practicing repertoire at home.

Group Violin/Strings/Winds
  
Beginning Group Violin for Young Players

Students will learn basic music concepts in relationship to the violin. They will learn how to hold and bow the violin through interactive games and exercises. Note and rhythm concepts will be introduced mostly by listening and imitating. Parents are encouraged to participate through observation and note taking in order to facilitate practice sessions at home. Students will need a violin and the book Essential Elements for the Violin.

Guitar For Girls:

This course is designed for girls (ages 8-12) who have a passion for guitar! Topics will include chord playing, technique, and basic music theory as we work towards developing a repertoire of your favorite artists. Guitar Ensemble

This class is for students who love playing the guitar and are looking to further develop their musical abilities outside of their one-on-one private lessons. Unlike rock or jazz groups, this ensemble will be comprised solely of fellow guitar players! Music, which will be provided by the instructor, will consist of a variety of genres and playing styles. Students will have the opportunity to practice, learn, and rehearse four part songs and will begin to understand how the rhythms and harmonies of each piece merge when played together. Additional benefits of this course include learning to play with other musicians, improving your reading skills, and building friendships with people who play your instrument!

Contemporary Chamber Music

Have you ever wanted to play the music you hear on the radio, or on your Spotify playlist? The modern chamber music program offers an opportunity to develop your musicianship and technique as well as the chance to play with others to really fun music to perform!  Students will focus on developing ensemble skills, intonation, tone quality, interpretation, performance techniques and rhythmic accuracy. This is all done to the modern arrangements of popular/contemporary tunes provided by a contributing Grammy award winning composer/arranger, which also teaches students the ability to work in a variety of contemporary genres spanning hip hop, classical, rock, folk, and much more!  Whether you are an advanced beginner or an accomplished amateur musician, there is something for everyone! Reinvigorate your learning!

New School of Jazz

Honors Jazz Ensembles (students placed by audition)

The Honors Ensemble program strives to bring together some of the finest high school and middle school jazz musicians in Seattle to explore the art of Jazz. The small group dynamic emphasizes ensemble performance and improvisation while exploring the history of Jazz by playing compositions by many of its greatest artists. The ensembles have performed throughout the Seattle area, including at the Bellevue Jazz Festival, Tula's Jazz Club, Boxley’s, and Bake's Place. Students are encouraged to contribute arrangements and original compositions, and to have an active role in the rehearsal and performance process. Placement by audition on April 1st, 2017. Rhythm section at 10:30 am and horns section at 11:00 am in 15 minute time slots. Students should be prepared to play scales, sight read, and improvise on a Blues (and perhaps a Jazz Standard). Interested students should contact Music Works to schedule audition.

Afro-Cuban Jazz Combo

Fred Hoadley has been and is currently a leading performer and authority on Afro-Cuban music in the northwest for 20 plus years. For decades, African-inspired Cuban music has influenced the world of Jazz with its infectious rhythms and beautiful melodies. Students will be able to work on improvisation through Afro-Cuban arrangements.

In Gotta Sing Children's Choir, our mission is to provide a fun, safe environment in which children can learn a wide variety of repertoire, gain a strong background in music theory, and develop good habits pedagogically. They will learn all about singing with others, and singing strong on their own! In our weekly rehearsals, the children will not only gain experience with solfege, ear training, music theory, and sightreading, but they will also learn accountability, professionalism, teamwork, and commitment - all things that will contribute to their future success as musicians. Social Skills through Music – Ages 7 - 10

Music Therapy addresses multiple therapeutic goals simultaneously by utilizing playful and interactive interventions such as:

• musical ensembles in which children learn basic cooperation and social skills

• group improvisation in which children become more aware of the interaction of others

• songwriting in which youngsters express creativity and collaborate with others to create

• singing songs that teach and reinforce basic social skills

Sing It Out! Choir

Sing It Out! Choir is a music therapy group open to students ages 12 and up through teens with differing needs and abilities that love to sing and play instruments. Focusing on musical skill building, participants will learn to express themselves musically by singing with others and exploring a variety of musical styles. Making music enhances attention skills, social skills, cognitive skills, and gives everyone opportunities for expression. The last class of the 10-week session will be a performance for friends and family. Voices of Sunshine Choir

Join Voices of Sunshine! We are a community choir for adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities focused on using our most natural instrument - our voices to make music, make friends, and to have fun! All levels of vocal talent are welcome. Harmony, rhythm and tone will be explored. Our musical material is influenced by what our choir members enjoy listening to, making each term all the more fun and unique! The choir will meet once a week for 10 weeks for an hour. We request that participants needing one-on-one care or personal assistance be accompanied by an assistant while taking part in the choir. A final performance will be presented to family and friends in Week 10. Come share your passion for singing and spread rays of sunshine!

Group Piano

This 10-week course introduces students to the basic technique involved in playing the piano as well as beginning music theory. Fundamental concepts explored include: Hand position, note recognition and sight-reading, rhythm and meter, ensemble playing, individual repertoire, and composition/improvisation.

Classes are organized with a variety of activities that include: group rhythm and playing activities, individual worksheets to explore musical concepts, solo performances, ensemble performance, and computer based learning and composition activities.

Parents are required to provide, and bring, the following materials to each class:

Group piano for Young Players

This 10 week class provides a balance between the discipline necessary for playing the piano and the enjoyment one receives from the process of music-making.  Group Piano Classes will offer the beginning piano/keyboard student an introduction to the basics of playing piano/keyboard from chord progressions, ear training, proper technique and form through basic scales. Students will learn a combination of hand exercises, practice and performance pieces, as well as music appreciation and theory. In addition, students will practice performance etiquette and presentation during each lesson.   

THINGS TO BRING:  Every lesson requires you to bring your notebook and practice record/worksheets, along with your music song books.

Beginning Marimba Ensemble

Have you been interested in playing classical music, popular music, or music from different cultures? Did you see a marimba ensemble perform when you were in Mexico, and always wanted to play? The Marimba Ensemble is open to elementary and middle school students and is designed for students with different experiences and backgrounds. Students will have a chance to be exposed to classical music and music from different cultures through a marimba duet, trio, quartet, and/or larger ensembles. Prior mallet experience is preferred, but basic marimba technique will be reviewed in class.
