Scott A. Ketron grew up in Helena Montana. As a boy he studied violin and piano. These instruments provided a great foundation for learning music in general. In the eighth grade he found that playing the drums was his real passion. Using money that he earned from his newspaper route he and his parents split the cost of his first drum set in 1971. The neighborhood was never the same after that. In 1989 Scott earned a BM in Percussion Performance from Eastern Washington University and in 1991 an MM in Percussion Performance from Central Washington University where he served as a teaching assistant in the Jazz and Percussion programs. Scott has studied with many notable teachers including Martin Zyskowski, Andrew Spencer, Dave Samuels, Julie Spencer, and Garey Williams. During his first 40 years of life he performed in hundreds of situations including the Spokane Symphony, Seattle Men’s and Women’s Chorus back up bands, a traveling percussion group that performed at the 1986 Worlds Fair, dozens of recording projects, concerts, solo performances, weddings and other events. He has taught individual lessons for over 25 years. Several students are now note worthy professionals including Jazz Pianist Aaron Parks and Percussionist Sandi Sheuerman (Broadway Show “Blast” featured marimbist) Through out his diverse career he has never lost his passion for performing and mentoring. He served as an adjudicator and clinician in Washington and Oregon. In 1998 he was elected President of the Washington Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society and served in that position through 2002. He organized many events including a yearly percussion day that featured performances clinics, adjudications and nationally known guest artists. 1991 was the first year that he taught with the Imperials Music and Youth Organization later to become Music Works Northwest. Through his early experiences teaching for this organization he gained a real passion for high quality, life changing musical experiences. Students were exposed professional mentorship, performances in excellent venues, recording and tours all in one program offering. He taught a variety of ensembles. Through these programs and his personal work as a performer he made connections with educators and students from around the region. After a little more than 1.5 years as Interim Executive Director at Music Works Northwest, his new role since October 1, 2007 is Music Works Northwest’s Artistic Director. In addition to organizing and shaping the programming at Music works he teaches private drum set and percussion lessons and continues to be active in the community serving in an advisory role for the Bellevue Jazz Festival and Chamber Music America's Jazz Think Tank. He is a sought after adjudicator and clinician regionally and is an active member of the Washington Music Educators Association. Scott currently lives in SE Renton, WA with his wife Akiko. They enjoy hiking, traveling, skiing, playing music together and good food. Music Works is proud to offer individual drum set and percussion lessons with Scott A. Ketron.
